OceanGate Submersible
On June 18, 2023, a submersible operated by OceanGate Expeditions imploded while on a journey to the wreckage of the Titanic. All five passengers on board were killed in the incident.
The submersible, named Titan, was designed to withstand the extreme water pressure at the depth of the Titanic wreck. However, for reasons that are still under investigation, the submersible imploded at a depth of approximately 12,500 feet (3,810 meters).
The debris from the implosion was located about 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the Titanic wreck. The debris included the submersible’s tail cone, its main cabin, and its life raft. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the implosion.
